How I'm Healing & FINALLY losing weight!

As a result of this book, I feel like I have the answers to WHAT is going on in my body, WHY it happened, and HOW to finally heal. This is HUGE!!!

 

 

A BIT OF HISTORY

40 years ago I fell in love with a young man who was interested in health and nutrition so, of course, I became interested in it too. The relationship didn't last, but my love for health and healing quickly became a lifelong passion. 28 years ago I began my formal nutrition training when I enrolled in Bauman College of Holistic Nutrition. I loved it so much that I even audited the program a 2nd time to absorb and comprehend as much of the information as I could.

Bottom line is that I have been eating good quality food, mostly avoiding the "nutritional bandits" that rob us of our health, and taking good care of myself for a VERY long time. And despite a genetic predisposition to weak adrenals, a lifelong compulsion to over-achieve, many years of working on my feet in physically demanding jobs, and being a full time, single “super” mom, I experienced excellent health.  

In 2003 though, my son became critically ill for 6 months which was a terrifying and exhausting time. Then, I entered menopause which further taxed my system. And THEN, I entered a 4 year program to become a licensed spiritual counselor - on top of working full time of course! With all of the stress and fatigue my good habits slipped more and more often, and I developed digestive problems and gained 30 pounds. In 2008, I finally had some lab work done to measure my cortisol levels, and was diagnosed with severe adrenal exhaustion. Seeing my test results in black and white really got my attention and I began a comprehensive program to heal and balance my body. As a result, not only did I experience improved health, I also lost those 30 pounds, felt much more energetic, and was able to return to my normal busy life.

However, 3 1/2 years ago I again experienced an emotionally traumatic event that dealt my adrenals such a blow that I haven't been able to recover from it. I literally withdrew from most activities except working and very low-key connections with friends and family - and still it felt like too much. Not only were my adrenals struggling but my digestive problems returned as well and I gained 20 pounds again. With eating clean 95% of the time, doing the Nutritional E-Cleanse Program seasonally, and really watching my schedule so as not to overdo it, I could "manage" to keep up with my life - most of the time. But there were also times when I would just crash and have to lay down all day to recover.

I threw myself into every health book and blog I could find, got acupuncture treatments weekly, walked or hiked 4-5 days a week, and did yoga daily (in addition to seeing massage clients) - but nothing worked. I even tried a program specifically designed for weight loss where I weighed and measured all my food, but my weight didn't budge AT ALL!  I began to question my ability to help others heal when I couldn't even heal myself.

What in heaven’s name was I doing wrong? I knew that it was more than just about losing the weight. I needed to figure out what was going on internally that was going to make a difference.

It wasn’t until I stumbled upon an incredible book that all the AH-HA moments and light bulbs went off. I finally discovered how to start healing myself. 

 

THE BOOK THAT CHANGED MY LIFE

I recently purchased the book, Medical Medium: Secrets Behind Chronic and Mystery Illness and How to Finally Heal by Anthony William. This is unlike any other book on health and healing that I've read. When, in the first chapter, he spoke about the importance of healing Soul, Heart & Spirit, I was hooked. The remainder of the book is devoted to the causes of numerous "mystery illnesses" and protocols of how to heal them. However, the information flies in the face of a LOT of what I've learned about nutrition over the years. Still, THAT wasn't working... so I thought I'd give it a try.

As a result of this book, I feel like I have the answers to WHAT is going on in my body, WHY it happened, and HOW to finally heal. This is HUGE!!!

 

WHAT I AM SUFFERING FROM

After doing a ton of research and reading this book, I have come to the conclusion that not only am I suffering from adrenal fatigue and digestive disorders, but also from thyroid issues, insulin resistance, and a sluggish or fatty liver - as they tend to go hand in hand with adrenal problems. In addition, I am also dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and probably a toxic overload of heavy metals

While that may sound scary, I completely believe in the body's ability to restore itself to health if given what it needs through diet, supplements, and lifestyle changes, so I decided to start with doing the 28 day raw fruit and vegetable cleanse Medical Medium shares in his book.

Please note: It isn't necessary to start with (or even do) the 28 day cleanse - in fact the book focuses mostly on moving at a more gentle pace (especially for those folks with more serious issues), but I'm kind of an "all or nothing" kind of gal.

 

WHAT I DIDN'T EAT

I'm used to giving up the "nutritional bandits" of alcohol, caffeine, sugar, gluten, refined & processed foods, dairy, beef & pork, bad fats, and chemicals for long periods of time when doing the Nutritional E-Cleanse Program. In addition, this program calls for eliminating all animal protein (including eggs and fish), legumes, grains, starchy veggies, and all fats except avocados. 

I was a firm believer that you needed protein, fat and carbohydrates at every meal. This is what balances your blood sugar, right? And that eating a lot of fruit causes blood sugar to spike, insulin levels to rise, and the body to create fat and inflammation - which ultimately leads to disease.

It took me a long time to wrap my head around this new way of eating, but this book is SO convincing and FEELS so right, that I gave it a try even though it went against everything I believed. After all, it was only for 28 days.

And what an incredible experience it has been!

 

WHAT I ATE

Here is what a typical day on this cleanse looked like for me:

  • Early morning - 16 oz. celery juice
  • Breakfast - Smoothie of 2-3 bananas, 1 heaping cup frozen wild blueberries, 2 dates, 1 cup butter leaf lettuce, 1 tsp Hawaiian Spirulina, 1 tsp Barley Grass Juice Extract Powder, and 1 cup cold water.
  • Mid-morning snack- handful red grapes and celery stalk
  • Lunch - Smoothie of 1 cup frozen mango, 1 cup frozen pineapple, raspberries, or mixed berries, 2 dates, 1/2 cup cilantro, 1 cup spinach or power greens (kale, chard & spinach), 1 tsp Hawaiian Spirulina, 1 tsp Barley Grass Juice Extract Powder, and 1 1/2 cups coconut water
  • Mid-afternoon snack - orange, grapefruit, peach, or melon, etc and celery stalk - if I still felt hungry I added a banana.
  • Afternoon tea -  I choose from one of 4 different herbal teas that specifically help with my ailments: Licorice root, dandelion, nettle leaf, or raspberry leaf
  • Dinner - Large salad with mixed lettuces (Romaine, red leaf, green leaf, or spring mix), sprouts, parsley, scallions, cucumber, shredded carrots, tomato, beets, etc. with 1/2 an avocado and fresh juice of 1/2 an orange for the dressing. I also added a handful of lightly steamed asparagus as well since it is so important for healing the liver. 
  • Evening tea - I choose from one of 4 different herbal teas that specifically help with my ailments: Licorice root, dandelion, nettle leaf, or raspberry leaf
  • Evening snack: 1 date and a red apple -  if I still felt hungry I added a banana.

I know this seems like a LOT of fruit, but Medical Medium makes a very convincing argument that fruit is the most important fuel the body needs. (The key is to reduce fat consumption when you do this.) And I have to admit that as soon as I started eating this way, I felt SO much better and had tons more energy. 

And you're probably asking "where is the protein"? And the answer is that spirulina, barley grass juice extract powder, and sprouts are sources of high quality protein that are easily absorbed. In addition, if you added up the protein in ALL those fruits and veggies, you would find that it comes to a quite a bit - and are all highly absorbable as well.

 

HEALING HERBS & SUPPLEMENTS

As part of my healing program I have added an herb or supplement every few days that are recommended to help with my condition. (Not only is that kindest to the body, but I can also determine if I have an adverse reaction to something.) Some are shown above (in bold print) added to meals or as teas. Others are taken in the form of tinctures or capsules.

 

SYMPTOMS & SIDE EFFECTS

In all fairness, I'm probably not a good example as to what one might experience as side effects doing this cleanse since I eat really clean most of the time. For the first few days I did experience a bit of a headache, was a little tired, and peed and pooped a LOT - but mostly I just felt SO MUCH BETTER on all levels. I am sleeping well, no longer feel overwhelmed and stressed out, my gut problems have disappeared, and my energy level has been so good that I have finally gotten around to house and yard projects that I have put off for a long time. AND... (drum roll, please!), I've lost 8 pounds so far. It's so nice to see those numbers on the scale getting smaller and my clothes fitting better - YAY!!!

And I"ve NEVER felt deprived and unsatisfied at all. Even when I've shared meals with others where they were eating food not on my plan, I always felt good and happy with what I was eating.

 

GOING FORWARD

This journey is not over, in fact, it has just begun. Healing takes time. This didn't happen overnight so I'm committed to staying the course. I'm SO grateful to finally feel like I am on the right path.

Now that the 28-day cleanse is finished and, as I continue to heal, I won’t be going back to the old way of eating protein, fat, and carbs for every meal. I simply couldn’t heal doing that. I'm not saying that's a "wrong" way to eat - it just isn't right for me at this time.

Going forward, my intention is to continue with this routine and then listen to my body - adding some cooked veggies, lean cuts of meat, fowl, and fish or legumes and healthy grains (like quinoa or rice) as I feel called to. I'm really looking forward to trying some of the recipes in Medical Medium's 2nd book, Life Changing Foods
